Hello, friends!
Before I start, some context because I’ve been thinking about this for a while. As someone who spends the majority of their days sat on the same pink sofa at the same laptop, hammering out words for books that go off into the world and leave me behind, still on the sofa, still hammering out words, my connections on social media are priceless to me.
To a work-from-home-writer-weirdo, our little interactions, comments on posts, DMs, gifs, memes and likes, are the equivalent of a sneaky chat in the coffee room, a co-worker debrief over a Prêt sandwich. What I’m trying to say is, you’re all my co-workers and our relationship helps keep me sane (or at least as close to it as possible. I am also medicated and in therapy, don’t worry about me, this is not all on you).
With the increasing attacks on social media, I worry about what will happen if it goes away. I’ve already deleted my Twitter account and if I’m honest, I don’t like the way Meta is going either. But what would I do without my Instagram and Facebook besties? Every other conversation with my husband starts with “my friend sent me this thing” and you are that friend. I would be lost without an inbox full of cat Reels and wrestling TikToks, I really would
So, with that in mind, behold - my Substack newsletter! Only it’s not really a newsletter, it’s a hub, a community. Somewhere we can all come together without the threat of censorship or moderation from outside forces, without anyone casually dropping dictators we never wanted to follow into our newsfeed. There will be a weekly newsletter, yes, and there will be a discussion board, a podcast, giveaways, Q&As, voicenotes, videos and all the other things Substack enables. Maybe not all at the same time but they will happen.
If you sign up for a free subscription - yay! I’m so happy to have you. That gives you access to some newsletter content and first look book updates. If you’re able to do a paid subscription, double yay! The only way I can really warrant taking time out of my book/screenwriting schedule to do this is if I find a paid subscription community so I really want to make it worth your while. You’ll get a weekly newsletter full of all sorts of the nonsense you’ve come to expect (books, writing, beauty, cats, snacks, wrestling, Taylor, telly, films, thoughts on the rise of Kieran Culkin, you know) plus an exclusive podcast, plus voicenotes, plus giveaways, Q&A, first looks at book stuff, and most importantly of all, our community discussions.
If you’re thinking “but Lindsey, I already signed up for your book newsletter?!” then thanks for that, it isn’t going anywhere but this is something entirely different. The publishing newsletter tells you about my upcoming books, tours, pre-orders, things like that. This newsletter is a conversation between you and me. You tell me what you want and I’ll do my best to deliver. More book chat? You’ve got it. Conversations with writer friends? Absolutely. A blow-by-blow look at every episode of Interview With The Vampire? I would be honoured. And for the Full Coverage fans out there, there will be So Much Beauty content, which I for one could not be more excited about.
So that’s it, really. If you read this far, wow, thanks, and if you decide to upgrade to a paid subscription, the first full newsletter will go out at the end of next week. Between now and then, I’d love to hear your thoughts about how this would best work for you and what you’d like see in our community.
Until then,
Love, Lindsey xo
